Many fantasized about the idea of a life in “The New World.” For a group of about 100 men from England, this became a reality in 1585. Queen Elizabeth I granted Sir Walter Raleigh permission to go and colonize an area of the North Carolina coastline. The village was one of the first English colonies in the New World. The men were only there a short ten months however, quickly making enemies with the Native Americans and eventually running out of supplies. Due to their hardships, the men left just two weeks before the ship carrying their supplies arrived. After the ship arrived to an empty colony, 15 soldiers were left behind to wait for the next group of colonists to arrive but were eventually killed by the Indians.
About two years later a new group of settlers including men, women and children arrived to the Outer Banks. There were many difficult obstacles for this group to overcome and about a year into their stay, Governor John White went back to England to gather more supplies. Because of the war between England and Spain, however it took him three years to return to the colony. Upon his arrival he found the colony, along with his family, had vanished leaving very few clues behind. The mystery of what happened to this “Lost Colony” is trivial and still one of the most debated mysteries today. What really happened to the lost colony of Roanoke?
